Early Beginning
St. Hellen’s church started in January 1984, by a small group of 13 people. They were led by the late Lay reader Rowland Kariuki and the Late Mrs. Nancy Njeri mburu. They started worshipping at Githurai Ting’ang’a Nursery school about one kilometer east of where we are. The Rev. Simon Maina currently out of the country was the vicar.
The first church committee was composed of the following: –
- Simon Maina
- Samuel maina thanji
The church grey fast and in April the same year, the first group of believers were baptized. Those baptized were: –
- Francis
- David
- Dominic
- Beatrice
On 2nd September 1984, two weddings were blessed. These were, Peter Nding’ai with Emily mwikali and Nathaniel chege with peninah njeri.
Church Plot
As the church continued to grow, it became necessary to look for a suitable plot where a house of worship would be constructed.
The vicar, the Rev Simon maina with members of the church committee, approached langata development company with a view to allocating them a church plot. It is with much appreciation that we record the assistance, which was given to that committee by Mr. Davis Moni, the people’s warden and the late Samuel Wanjohi a former director of Langata Development Company.
Langata Development company then allotted this plot (where we are now) in January 1985. We praised God and thank Langata Development Company directors for their response.
Construction of the church.

This committee set 26th October 1985, as the day when all church members would assemble at this plot to start digging the foundation of the church. This was the beginning of a self-help job of the construction of this sanctuary.
On 24th November 1985, this plot was consecrated and the foundation stone of the church laid by the retired Archbishop. The Most Rev. Manasses Kuria. On that very day, two lay Leaders were licensed, three weddings were blessed and four members of the mother’s union were commissioned.
Worship services, however continued to be held at Ting’ag’a githurai nursery school, while construction work was in progress. However, on 10th August 1986 the congregation moved from the nursery school to the new church although it had no roof.
In May 1987, Mr. latibhai patel through the late counselor Charles Maina Wanjuguna donated iron sheets for the roof. The roofing work was then done immediately.
It was however decided that the church was too small for the growing congregation and therefore plans were made to extend the church. The extension work was started in 1992 as the furniture was also being made.
Final internal decorations and stronger doors have just been completed by now. We thank God who was takes us this far.
